PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of an alignment defect due to discharge of static electricity which is produced by rubbing in a liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element which is driven with low-duty of 1/16 or more duty ratio is fabricated using the following procedure. A first substrate which is equipped with a first electrode having a predetermined shape is prepared. A second substrate which is equipped with a second electrode having a shape different from the predetermined shape, wherein the number of signal line electrodes is less than that of the first electrode, is prepared. Insulating films having insulating properties as necessitated are formed on the respective first and second electrodes. First and second vertical alignment layers are formed above the first substrate and the second substrate so as to cover the first and second electrodes. Only the second vertical alignment layer is subjected to rubbing treatment. The first substrate and the second substrate are placed opposite to each other, and a liquid crystal with a negative dielectric anisotropy value is disposed between the substrates.
