PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a sliding type arm rest arranged between a front passenger seat and a driver's seat of a vehicle such as an automobile capable of slidably expanding/contracting an arm placement cover part of the arm rest in a longitudinal direction of the seat, in particular, at advancement, being automatically expanding to a terminal end by an elastic body comprising a constant load spring, and at retreating, being retreated/operated by manual operation, attaining stopping at a predetermined position, and enhancing operability. SOLUTION: In the sliding type arm rest, the arm rest is provided with a fixed base part 15 provided with: a pair of left and right rail parts 14, 14; and an arm rest movement part 18 provided with a slide plate 16 arranged so as to be slidably engaged with the rail parts and having a lock mechanism 24 capable of performing movement in an advancement direction and in a retreating direction and performing stopping at a predetermined position and a cover part 17 having a back surface side fixed to the slide plate 16 and arranged so as to cover the upper side of the slide plate. The slide plate 16 is automatically moved to an expansion terminal end position by an elastic body 30 at advancement, and the slide plate 16 is pressed/moved in a retreating direction, i.e., a storage starting end position by manual operation at movement at retreating.
