The invention relates to a device for controlling the mode of operation of an electric circuit in a motor vehicle. It has a protective circuit comprising a detection unit and a control unit. The detection unit is provided for detecting the parameter values of a predefined parameter during normal operation of the electric circuit. The control unit switches the electric circuit from normal operation into a protective operating mode if the parameter value detected by the detection unit exceeds a predefined threshold value. This switch from normal operation into the protective operating mode occurs only if a plausibility check supplies a positive result.
