Disclosed are: an organic EL element material whose light-emitting wavelength is controlled, and which has high luminous efficiency and a long emission life time; and an organic EL element, an illuminating device and a display device each using the organic EL element material. The organic EL element material is represented by the general formula (1). [General formula (1)] wherein A represents an atom group required for the formation of a 5- to 6-membered hydrocarbon ring or heterocyclic ring; X represents O, S, Se, Te or N-R<SUB>1</SUB>; Y<SUB>1</SUB> and Y<SUB>2</SUB> independently represent N or R<SUB>2</SUB>-C; R<SUB>1</SUB> and R<SUB>2</SUB> independently represent a hydrogen, an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group or a heteroaryl group; G<SUB>1</SUB> and G<SUB>2</SUB> independently represent a hydrogen atom or a substituent; X<SUB>1</SUB>-L<SUB>1</SUB>-X<SUB>2</SUB> represents a bidentate ligand; X<SUB>1</SUB> and X<SUB>2</SUB> independently represent a carbon atom, a nitrogen atom or an oxygen atom; L<SUB>1</SUB> represents an atom group which together with X<SUB>1</SUB> and X<SUB>2</SUB> forms a bidentate ligand; m1 represents an integer of 1 to 3 and m2 represents an integer of 0 to 2, provided that the sum total of m1 and m2 is 2 or 3; and M<SUB>1</SUB> represents a metal belonging to any one of Groups 8 to 10 on the periodic table.
