PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading and recording apparatus which can switch a recording operation and a reading operation in a short period of time without inviting the fall of the throughput resulting from the returning motion of a recording head or the wasting of an ink. SOLUTION: A trigger arm 196 as a paper feeding starting means which starts the driving transmission to a paper feeding means 7 according to the position of a carriage 270 is installed. The paper feeding starting means has a first lever section 196b, and a second lever section 196c. In this case, the first lever section 196b is used for feeding a recording paper sheet 3 under a state in which a cap 183 is apart from the discharging port surface 4e of the recording head 4.
