PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain high accuracy in focusing without being affected by the state of a cell as a sample, regarding high-contrast fluorescent observation using evanescent light. SOLUTION: The focus detector is applied to the fluorescent observation apparatus for observing a fluorescent image emitted from the observation sample 12 on the basis of the evanescent light, and includes a detection means 7 for detecting the contrast of the fluorescent image and a detection means 10 for detecting the focus on the basis of the detection result.
