PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a penetration tester for investigating ground strength. SOLUTION: The penetration tester includes a penetration rod 7 to be penetrated in the ground, a main control section constituted so as to detect the penetration state of the penetration rod as the penetration rod 7 is penetrated in the ground, an acoustic detecting means 13 for detecting an acoustic signal propagating in the penetration rod, and a recording section 15k for recording the acoustic signal detected by the acoustic detecting means 13. This penetration tester also comprises an acoustic record control section 15i for recording the acoustic signal whenever the penetration state of the penetration rod 7 varies. Accordingly, the acoustic signal from the acoustic detecting means 13 can be read whenever the penetration state of the penetration rod 7 varies. Consequently, not only the capacity of the acoustic signal stored by the recording section 15k decreases sharply, but also the strength of the ground can be accurately calculated from the boundary where the soil of the ground varies.
