PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which can detect attachment and detachment of a cartridge and can use an ink ribbon effectively. SOLUTION: When the printer remains loaded with the cartridge, an engagement member 23 engages with an engagement portion 4 of the cartridge. When a detection sensor 26 detects a member 25 to be detected which is located in a detectable first position (A), it is determined that the cartridge is not removed to turn the cartridge reloaded, the engagement member 23 gets unready to engage with the engagement portion 4 of the cartridge, and the member 25 to be detected maintains a second position where it cannot be detected (E). Consequently, the detection sensor 26 does not detect the member 25 to be detected and it is determined that the cartridge is removed.
