A roll or glide contact surface (2) is formed in a roller bearing component (1) using a hard turning tool (4) and then the surface is subjected to a fine finishing step in order to remove the original turned structure whilst retaining the micro-pockets formed during turning. The tool is subjected to a vibration in its length direction during turning, in order to create a number of recesses (6) with a substantially curved cross-section in the surface.
