An image forming apparatus and an image forming method thereof are provided to compensate the surface potential of a photoreceptor lost by a flow of electric charges in charging the surface of the photoreceptor, thereby improving the quality of printing. A charging unit(130) charges the surface of a photoreceptor(140) to a predetermined surface potential. A power supply unit(180) applies one of normal charging power for normal charging and compensated charging power, which has a greater absolute value than that of the normal charging power and the same polarity as the normal charging power, to the charging unit. A control unit(190) controls the power supply unit to apply the normal charging power and the compensated charging power to the charging unit respectively before and after the rear end contact surface of the photoreceptor, with which the rear end of a printing medium(P1) is in contact, is charged by the charging unit. The control unit includes a charging time estimator(193) for estimating a charging point of time.
