A hydraulic tensioner is provided to perform stably a check valve function by improving a tension control method. A check valve unit(140) includes a check ball valve(141), a ball guide(142), a retainer(143), and a ball sheet(144). The check ball valve is used for regulating a flow rate of oil. The ball guide is composed of a steel material. The ball guide includes an inner surrounding wall to move the check ball valve within the inner surrounding wall. The retainer is composed of a steel material. The retainer is attached to a high pressure oil chamber of the ball guide and includes an oil hole for supplying the oil to the high pressure oil chamber in a sealing state of the check ball valve within the ball guide. The ball sheet is attached to an oil supply side of the ball guide in order to suppress the reverse flow of the oil. Expansion units for fixing units are installed on an outer surrounding wall of the ball guide in order to press the ball sheet into the ball sheet into an inner surrounding wall of a plunger receiving hole.
