A method of pre-processing an image to identify processes for subsequent processing of the image, comprising the steps of (a) investigating portions of the image using a spatial filter, (b) calculating a metric as a function of intensity within portions of the filter; and (c) comparing the metric with process thresholds for subsequent processes so as to identify subsequent processes that can be eliminated. The method allows the quick assessment of the most appropriate algorithm to enable a high chance of success in the determination of certain image features such as faces, irrespective of their orientation. In a preferred embodiment, the filter has regions arranged in rotationally symmetric manner (eg concentric rectangles). |
