A portable terminal having a wheel key and a direction judgement method thereof are provided to minimize the volume of operations and judge the directions of manipulation signals inputted through a wheel key speedily by executing a specific operation on the basis of the potential states of the first and second digital signals and judging the direction of an inputted manipulation signal according to an operation result. A control part in a portable terminal having a wheel key determines whether a manipulation signal is inputted through the wheel key(S210). If a manipulation signal is inputted, the control part receives a first digital signal and a second digital signal from the wheel key(S220). Then the control part confirms whether an interrupt, which is generated when the potential state of the first digital signal is changed, is detected(S230). If so, the control part confirms the potential state of the second digital signal(S240). The control part executes a specific operation on the basis of the confirmed potential states(S250). Based on an operation result, the control part judges the direction of the inputted manipulation signal(S260).
