A lift and a method of monitoring the same are provided to prevent an accident by monitoring loosening of a support device for connecting and supporting a lift cage and a balance weight. A lift includes a lift cage, a balance weight, a support device(7), and a driving unit(9). The lift cage and the balance weight move on a lift path. The support device connects and supports the lift cage and the balance weight. The driving unit drives the support device. The driving unit functions as a force storing unit and has at least one spring element(22) to lift the driving unit when the load is not applied to the support device. At least one sensor(29) is installed in the driving unit to detect lifting of the driving unit and switch off a motor(30) of the driving unit.
