R 1 is selected from the group consisting of -C(O)CH 3 , -CO 2 R 3 , -C(O)NH 2 and -C(O)N(R 4 ) 2 ; X is O or NH; R 2 is linear or branched C 1 to C 30 alkyl; R 3 is linear or branched C 1 to C 20 alkyl; and each R 4 is independently hydrogen, or linear or branched C 1 to C 8 alkyl; R 5 is hydrogen, and R 6 is linear or branched C 1 -C 8 alkyl. Sunscreen formulations which contain these compounds and methods for using these compounds to prepare formulations are also provided.
