Cresol methyl and ethyl ethers containing nuclear alkyl groups are prepared by treating cresol methyl and ethyl ethers with olefines other than ethylene in the presence of condensing agents usually employed in the conversion of phenols with olefines into alkylphenols. The products are useful as starting materials for the manufacture of perfumes. Examples are given of the condensation of m-cresol methyl ether and isobutylene in the presence of aluminium chloride to give 1-methyl-3-methoxy-4-tert-butylbenzene, m-cresol methyl ether with propylene using aluminium chloride to produce a mixture of isomeric thymol methyl ethers, p-cresol methyl ether with isobutylene in the presence of sulphuric acid to form tert-butyl-p-cresol methyl ether, and o-cresol methyl ether with isobutylene in the presence of phosphoric acid to give tert-butyl-o-cresol methyl ether. |
