An electronic device includes an electroactive display 104, preferably a reflective bistable display such as an electrophoretic display 104, and a light to illuminate the display 104. The display has a viewing surface, which may be curved, and the light is configured to illuminate the display from in front and to one side of an edge of the viewing surface, across the viewing surface and through a front-most surface of the display. Preferably the light comprises a stripe of LEDs (200) disposed along an edge of the viewing surface, the light being directed across the viewing surface via an optical system. The device may be an electronic book type, with two electroactive displays 104 hingedly connected to opposite sides of a central spine, where the light is mounted on the spine 106 to provide illumination across both electroactive displays 104. The light may be capable of changing colour according to the information displayed on the viewing surface. |
