The invention provides materials having spectral characteristics, light resistance, solubility and thermal decomposition characteristics suitable fo r DVD-R recording, more specifically, squarylium-metal complexes represented b y the general formula (I): (I)wherein R1~ and R2~ are each independently optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted aralkyl, optionally substituted aryl, or an optionally substituted heterocyclic group; Q is a metal atom having ability to coordinate; q is 2 or 3; and A is optionally substituted aryl, an optionally substituted hetero- cyclic group, or Y=CH- (wherein Y is optionally substituted aryl or an optionally substituted heterocyclic group).
