An apparatus and a method for inputting characters in a terminal are provided to display an extension key set including characters which can be inputted next to an inputted key on a touch screen, thereby easily inputting the characters. A method for inputting characters in a terminal comprises the following steps of: waiting for the touch of a key(801); checking the input of the key(803); determining whether the inputted key is a character key(805); determining characters to be displayed on a touch screen(809); displaying the checked key on the touch screen(811); determining whether a character for the inputted key is inputted in a primary key set(813); and displaying an extension key set for the inputted key(815).
