A circuit and a method for driving a laser diode in an optical disk drive are provided to add a high frequency signal to a compensation signal during the reproduction and to add light power as much as the high frequency signal to a recording signal during the recording so as to keep the light power at a certain level and to keep a driving signal level of the laser diode at a certain level, thereby controlling the light power of the laser diode stably. A circuit for driving a laser diode in an optical disk drive comprises an OP amplifier(10), a high frequency digital/analog converter(14), first and second digital/analog converters(16,17), adders(12,13), and a microcomputer(18). The OP amplifier outputs a difference signal between a laser diode light detecting signal and a reference level signal. The high frequency digital/analog converter outputs a high frequency signal. The first and second digital/analog converters output first and second recording signals. The adders add the output of the high frequency digital/analog converter to an output signal of the OP amplifier during the reproduction, and add output signals of the first and second digital/analog converters to the output signal of the OP amplifier during the recording to output a laser diode driving signal. The microcomputer controls the operations of the digital/analog converters during the reproduction and the recording. An amplifier(11) amplifies the output signal of the OP amplifier by a certain amount.
