An image processing apparatus, an image processing method, and a program are provided to perform a non-linear editing without a time code. A feature extracting unit(121) extracts a compressed feature with a data amount smaller than image data of one frame, namely, most significant 2 bits of a bit stream indicating a pixel value of each pixel of one frame with respect to image data of each frame reproduced from recording media(11). A display controller(125) displays the compressed feature on a display device(15). A process information determining unit(46) determines performing of the compressed feature on the image data according to an editing manipulation of a remote commander(14) by a user, and outputs processed information. A recording unit(123) records the processed information in a recording medium(124) by matching it to a process feature, namely, a certain process feature of the image data.
