A recording medium, a method of allocating areas in the recording medium, and a method and an apparatus for recording data are provided to preclude damage to management information resulting from the data test and to record the data in the recording medium stably by placing a buffer between a management data recorded area and a data test area. An optical recording and reproducing apparatus comprises a pickup(11), a servo(14), a signal processing part(13), a memory(15), and a microcomputer(16). The servo controls the operation of the pickup. The signal processing part recovers a reproduction signal received from the pickup to a desired signal value and to modulate a signal to be recorded in an optical disk(30). Data which is read from an optical disk or a storage(19) is provided to a decoder. A signal which is encoded by an AV encoder(18) is recorded in the optical disk. A controller(12) controls the components and downloads the data from the external device. An AV decoder(17) decodes the data from the storage into output data based on the control of the controller. A buffer is placed between a management data recorded area and a test area.
