[Class 51 (i).] In furnaces using regeneratively heated air the temperature of the air is reduced before being supplied to beneath the grate by passing it through the fuel on the front portion of the grate or through the fuel in the feeding hopper. As shown in Fig. 1, air is forced by a fan 6 through the heater 4 and thence through conduits 8, 9 and a layer of fuel on the front of the grate before entering the space 14 beneath the upper run of the travelling grate 2. If the temperature of the air is not high enough to endanger the grate, the air may be led direct to the grate through the branch conduit 24. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the air from the conduit 9 is supplied through perforated pipes 16 to the fuel passing downwardly between inclined plates 17, 18 in the fuel hopper. The air enters an outer casing 19 and passes to beneath the grate. In both modifications air may also be led through openings in the furnace wall to the furnace above the grate.
