The method involves determining a nominal total height, and determining a total height of an aircraft with respect to a specific relation having parameters such as height of the aircraft with respect to runway threshold, speed of the aircraft and earth gravitational field. A maximum nominal total height that the plane is able to reach from its current position matched to the nominal total height, is determined, while following a variation law of an optimal total height. A nominal height matched to the maximum nominal total height that the aircraft is able to reach, is determined. An independent claim is also included for a piloting device comprising a parameter acquisition unit and a calculating unit.
