PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal device capable of properly notifying a user of a software update status, and a program update control method in the device. SOLUTION: The portable terminal device is provided with: a display unit 15 for displaying information; a storage unit 13 for storing a plurality of processing programs used for internal processing; a communication unit 11 connectable to a public communication network; and a control unit 12 for acquiring an updated program for one of the processing programs via the communication unit 11 and capable of executing program update control for controlling the storage unit 13 so that the program can be overwritten on a processing program corresponding to the update program. If program update control has abnormally terminated, the control unit 12 allows the display unit 15 to intermittently display a notice screen indicating that it has abnormally terminated.
