PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens system whose entire length is short, which has high resolution, whose variable power ratio is large such as 9 or more, and which can be completely adapted for such wide-angle photography that an angle of view at a wide angle end is 70°or more, and an imaging apparatus including the zoom lens system and a thin and compact camera. SOLUTION: The zoom lens system has a plurality of lens groups constituted of at least one lens element, and is at least equipped with a first lens group having positive power, a second lens group having negative power, a third lens group having positive power, a fourth lens group and a fifth lens group in order from an object side to an image side. In zooming from the wide angle end to a telephoto end when imaging, at least the first lens group and the second lens group move in an optical axis direction.
