PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economical and reliable structure system for deformably resisting passing loads such as earthquakes, impacts, other episodic intensive reason or the like. SOLUTION: Deformation capacity is enhanced by the use of multiple dissipative zones determined by one or more voids 6a to 6f that are located in the web 4 of a sustainer 3. The voids are of a size, a shape and a configuration to assure that the dissipative zones deform inelastically when a critical stress is reached, thereby developing the action of a structural fuse, preventing the occurrence of stress and strain demands sufficient to cause fracture of the connection welds or adjacent heat-affected zones. The sustainers may be removably connected to the remainder of the structure, facilitating replacement after nonelastic deformation. Mechanical equipment and utilities may pass through the voids.
