PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel which has high strength and high corrosion resistance usable even for a large-sized structure and is inexpensively producible. SOLUTION: The high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel has a composition comprising 0.01 to 0.1% C, 0.1 to 1.0% Si, 0.1 to 3.0% Mn, 4.0 to <7.0% Ni, 15.0 to 20.0% Cr, 0.5 to 4.0% Mo and 0.4 to 1.0% N, wherein the content of P is limited to≤0.03%, S to≤0.01%, Al to≤0.01%, and O to≤0.02%, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. If required, one or more kinds selected from among 0.05 to 0.5% Ti, 0.05 to 0.5% V, 0.05 to 0.5% Nb, 0.05 to 0.5% W, 0.5 to 3.0% Co and 0.5 to 3.0% Cu are incorporated therein.
