In an internal combustion engine, output of an electric motor (27) can be superposed on the output of the engine. An SO_X trap catalyst (13) for capturing SO_X contained in an exhaust gas is arranged in an engine exhaust gas passage in the upstream of an NO_X adsorbing catalyst (14). When the SO_X trap catalyst (13) is regenerated, vehicle driving force by the engine and vehicle driving force by the electric motor (27) are regulated such that the SO_X concentration in the exhaust gas flowing out from the SO_X trap catalyst (13) is not more than a predetermined SO_X concentration during the regeneration period.
