Disclosed is a contrast formulation having improved biological tolerance and a physiologically acceptable pH and osmololity comprising a sterile aqueous solution of iosimenol; and a buffer comprising TRIS or N-methyl glucamine and citrate, wherein the molar ration of TRIS of N-methyl glucamine to citrate is in the range of greater than 3:1 to about 10:1 and said TRIS or N-methyl glucamine is at a concentration in the range of about 5mM to 40mM.
