A method for preparing an anion exchange membrane suitable for use in an alkaline fuel cell and particularly in a direct borohydride fuel cell, invol ves radiation grafting a hydrocarbon polymer film with a monomer and adding a quaternising agent. The degree of grafting is improved by mixing the monom er with a diluent comprising alcohol and a hydrocarbon solvent.
