PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the noise of a cooling fan, and to prevent electric power from being wasted, in an image reader which has a light source constituted by arraying a plurality of LED elements in a line by controlling the rotation and stopping of the cooling fan according to the number of LED elements which illuminate. SOLUTION: The light source is constituted by arraying the plurality of LED elements as spot light sources in a line. A control means controls each of the LED elements individually. The relationship between the number of LED elements which illuminate and the temperature of the light source is obtained in advance by experimentation using an actual machine, and the result is stored in the control means in the form of a table. When the number of the LED elements which illuminate is not smaller than c-pieces, a temperature of a component reaches a component specification temperature, but in the case that the number is smaller than c-pieces, the control means stops the cooling fan when the number of LED elements which illuminate is smaller than c-pieces, thus reducing noise and power consumption of the cooling fan.
