PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing device designed so as to prevent paper from igniting or smoking at the time of overheating without hindering a regular fixing operation. SOLUTION: If the temperature near a fixing belt 20 is lower than a predetermined temperature, the fixing belt 20 is heated by a heating source 25. In addition, a fixing operation is performed such that paper P is passed through a nip N formed between a roller 23 and the fixing belt 20 pressed by a pressing member 26 via a holding member 22. If the temperature near the fixing belt 20 exceeds the predetermined temperature, the pressing force of the pressing member 26 is released to release the fixing belt 20 from being pressed to the roller 23.
