PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for monitoring a failure of a radiation thermometer, capable of accurately monitoring the failure of the radiation thermometer provided in an annealing furnace. SOLUTION: The method measures an inlet side steel plate temperature and an outlet side steel plate temperature of a specified zone in the annealing furnace partitioned into the plurality of zones. The method has a temperature correction step of correcting a temperature measured value in the specified zone, based on a temperature measured value in the zone adjacent to a post-stage of the specified zone; a prediction temperature calculation step of calculating a predicted value of the outlet side steel plate temperature in the specified zone, based on a corrected temperature and an observed value of the inlet side steel plate temperature of the specified zone; and a determination step of determining the quality of the radiation thermometer by comparing the calculated predicted value of the outlet side steel plate temperature in the specified zone, with an observed value measured by the radiation thermometer for measuring the outlet side steel plate temperature in the specified zone.
