PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ionic compound composing a liquid crystal composition stabilizing the cubic phase applicable to a new high-speed display medium using the Kerr effects. SOLUTION: The ionic compound is represented by general formula (wherein, I is an ionic group such as sodium sulfonate; L is a binding group such as an ethylene group, a phenyl group or a cyclohexane group; S1 and S2 are each a binding group such as an ether, an ester and a single bond; A1 and A2 are each independently an aliphatic spacer having a straight chain or a branch which may contain or may not contain an oxygen; X and Y have each a hard structure called a core, are composed of, e.g. benzene, pyrimidine or cyclohexane and include the structure in which hydrogens thereof are partially substituted with a halogen atom such as a fluorine; and T1 and T2 are each a polar group such as a cyano group or a fluorine group or an alkyl group or an alkoxy group).
