PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which is satisfactorily fit to a mechanism designed so as to meet the width of a maximum size recording material and in which the portion of a cleaning material formed with an index part for final end discrimination does not adversely affect cleaning performance. SOLUTION: A web take-up motor 52 intermittently pulls a cleaning web 50 from a cleaning web supply roller 51a, 2 mm each time, and causes it to slide over an intermediate transfer belt 31. When a notch 50a for final end detection is detected by a flag 53a, the web take-up motor 52 pulls out the cleaning web 50, 70 mm all at once, and the part of the cleaning web 50, which part has passed the notch 50a, is positioned to the abutting part against the intermediate transfer belt 31.
