The invention relates to a method for the diagnosis and classification of defects of an internal combustion engine and/or the subsystem thereof. Said method consists of the following steps: measuring signals that contain information relating to the internal combustion engine and the subsystem thereof are recorded, symptoms from the difference between the measuring signals and reference values for the measuring signals are calculated, at least one first marked grade of defects from the combination of one or several symptoms is calculated, the overall state of the internal combustion engine and/or the subsystem thereof is defined and classified according to the defects and the grade thereof.
