The control device (20) has control elements for inputting control instructions for a model railway article i.e. traction vehicle, which exhibits a decoder, where an address is assigned to the railway article. A memory unit is provided for storing article-specific data of the railway article. A read device (43) is connected with the memory unit for reading a data memory (31), which is attached to a portable data carrier (30) that is attached to the railway article. The data carrier for reading the data memory is positionable at a reading station (41) and is designed as smart card. An independent claim is also included for a system with a portable data carrier.
