<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic shelf label system capable of collecting information on visitors to a store without requiring human work and at as low a cost as possible. <P>SOLUTION: The electronic shelf label system is made up of an electronic shelf label A installed adjacent to goods on display, and an inventory tag server with which a repeater 3 is connected for performing infrared communication with the electronic shelf label A. The installation place of the electronic shelf label A and the installation place of the repeater 3 are positioned in such a manner that if a person 9 is present in front of the installation place of the electronic shelf label A, the infrared communication between the repeater 3 and the electronic shelf label A is disconnected. If the electronic shelf label A detects the infrared communication disconnection, it transmits the duration of the disconnection to the shelf label server when the disconnection is released.
