PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp having practical electric characteristics and light emission characteristics without substantially sealing mercury and a mercury substituting material, that is, a lamp voltage forming halide, having a small color deviation, and improved in a life characteristic. SOLUTION: This high-pressure discharge lamp comprises: a translucent hermetically-sealed vessel 1 having a discharge space 1c in its inside; a pair of electrodes 2, 2 facing the discharge space; and an ionization medium including a metal halide and a rare gas, the metal halide including a halide of at least one of thulium (Tm) and holmium (Ho), of which the sealing ratio to all the sealed metal halides is not less than 30 mass%, the rare gas being xenon (Xe) at 25°C and 3 atm or higher, and any metal halide for lamp voltage formation and mercury being substantially absent within the translucent hermetically-sealed vessel.
