PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection cell which is used as one component of an optical biosensor. SOLUTION: The detection cell (2) comprises a transparent base plate (8) and a sample plate (4) on the base plate. The sample plate has a matrix of a plurality of wells (6), each extending through the inside and receiving a sample. The base plate includes a waveguiding film and a diffraction grating means and couples an incident light field into the waveguiding film beneath the well, to generate a diffracted light field, thereby enabling detection of the change in the effective refractive index of the waveguiding film.
