<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable electronic device capable of reducing occurrence of burning of an organic EL by evading a partial continuous display as much as possible. <P>SOLUTION: The portable electronic device comprises: a display unit 15 which includes a plurality of display elements and performs display while controlling a light emitting state for each of the plurality of display elements; a housing which is at least partially exposed in both open and closed states of the display unit; an operating unit 16 for inputting an instruction; and a control unit 12 which detects a state of the present device and performs state display to notify a predetermined region of the display unit about the state. When the housing is made in the open state, the control unit 12 allows the display unit to display a picture containing the state display and while the display unit performs the display in the open state of the housing, the display due to the display unit is not turned off even when the housing is brought into the closed state but after the lapse of a first time from the housing brought into the open state, the state display on the display unit is turned off to continue display other than the state display.
