PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator capable of enhancing the safety securement of passengers by enhancing the correspondency to a fire in a hoistway. SOLUTION: A fire detection means 11 and a fire extinguishing means 12 are provided on an outer surface part of a car 5 of an elevator. The fire detection means 11 detects a fire in a hoistway 1 and the fire break-out direction. When the fire detection means detects a fire in the hoistway, the car is evacuated in a direction opposite to the direction of the fire break-out direction, and the fire extinguishing means sprays a fire extinguishing agent in the hoistway in the fire break-out direction.
