Disclosed is an exhaust gas purifying catalyst (1) comprising a catalyst base (3) and catalyst coating layers (5, 7) which are formed on the catalyst base (3) and contain (a) Rh, (b) Pt, (c) an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal element, and (d) an inorganic oxide. This exhaust gas purifying catalyst (1) is characterized in that the catalyst coating layers (5, 7) have a layered structure composed of an inner layer (5) wherein the component (a) is substantially unevenly distributed and an outer layer (7) wherein the component (b) is substantially unevenly distributed, and the inner layer (5) also contains zirconia oxide. |
