DURING THE ROLLING OF SHEET METAL OR STRIP IN ROLLING MILL STANDS COMPRISING WORK ROLLS SUPPORTED ON BACK-UP ROLLS OR INTERMEDIATE ROLLS WITH BACK-UP ROLLS, WHEREIN THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE ROLL GAP IS EXECUTED BY AXIAL DISPLACEMENT OF PAIRS OF ROLLS PROVIDED WITH CURVED CONTOURS, IN CASES OF LARGER WIDTHS OF A PRODUCT SPECTRUM DEVIATIONS FROM THE REQUIRED PROFILE ARE FREQUENTLY OBSERVED AS A RESULT OF EXCESSIVE STRETCHING IN THE EDGE AREAS OR QUARTER AREAS WHICH ARE MANIFEST AS SO-CALLED QUARTER WAVES IN THE FLATNESS OF THE PRODUCT. IN ORDER TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM USING A SIMPLE MECHANISM AND TO ACHIEVE A FURTHER IMPROVEMENT IN THE ADJUSTING MECHANISMS AND THE STRATEGY FOR PRODUCING ABSOLUTELY FLAT SHEET STRIP HAVING A PRE-DETERMINING THICKNESS PROFILE OVER THE ENTIRE WIDTH OF THE ROLLED MATERIAL, IT IS PROPOSED ACCORDING TO THE INVENTION THAT IN ORDER TO CONSTRUCTED THE DESIRED ROLL GAP PROFILE (10, 11) FOR TWO SELECTED DISPLACEMENT POSITIONS, THE CONTOURS OF THE ROLLS OF A ROLL PAIR ARE CONFIGURED SUCH THAT IN THE ROLL GAP THEY PRODUCE A PROFILE (20, 21) SYMMETRICAL WITH RESPECT TO THE ROLL CENTRE WITH A PROFILE MAXIMUM AT THE ROLL CENTRE WHICH IS VARIABLE BY DISPLACEMENT OF THE ROLLS WHEREAS THE CONTOURS OF THE ROLLS OF AT LEAST ONE SECOND ROLL PAIR PRODUCE IN THE ROLL GAP A PROFILE (22, 23) SYMMETRICAL WITH RESPECT TO THE ROLL CENTRE WITH TWO EQUAL MAXIMA WHICH CAN BE VARIED BY AXIAL DISPLACEMENT OUTSIDE THE ROLL CENTER.(FIG 6,7)
