The method involves treating a steam containing gas e.g. air, for application in treating stages for goods to be dried such that the treatment of the gas is performed within an exchange device. The device is formed of a ventilator for transporting the steam, a tubular guide for inflow and outflow of the steam, and transfer surfaces for thermal and material exchanges. The steam is guided to the goods, and the goods are warmed by the overheated steam. The overheated steam is guided to the heated goods, and humidity of the goods is recorded from the steam and is derived from the goods. An independent claim is also included for a device for diagnosis of a characteristic in a drying process, comprising a temperature sensor.
