The sensor (10) has an image sensor (18) receiving light from a monitored area (14) by a transparent protective grid (32). An evaluation unit (20) is formed for light permeability test of the grid. A test light transmitter (34) is arranged at an edge of the grid such that test light transmitted by the transmitter is totally-reflected at an inner surface of the grid to transilluminate an inner space of the grid and pullout the intact, clean grid at the edges. The unit recognizes damages or impurities of the grid as a test light emission point based on a test light reception in the sensor (18). An independent claim is also included for a method for testing a light permeability of a protective grid of an optoelectronic sensor.
