PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recycle LED elements of an image reader which has a light source constituted by arraying a plurality of LED elements in a line after accurately knowing a remaining illumination time of the light source. SOLUTION: When the light source is detached from a previous image reader, a cumulative illumination time of the light source is displayed at a display section (S2). A serviceman when detaching the light source and attaching it to a next image reader manually inputs the cumulative illumination time through an input means of the next image reader ("YES" at S3). In a storage means of a control means, the cumulative illumination time is updated and stored to be updated into a cumulative illumination time after the light source is turned on. In the image reader, when the cumulative illumination time is not inputted manually, the cumulative illumination time is automatically detected based upon the output of the light source and the output of a CCD during shading correction.
