PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite material which is very useful as an oxidative catalyst or the like that is capable of sufficiently oxidizing a carbon-containing component such as soot and the components of HC, CO or NO or the like at a lower temperature.

SOLUTION: The composite material is composed of the fine particles of a metal oxide comprising the oxide of a valence variable metal and Ag ultrafine particles with an average primary particle diameter of 0.3-30 nm and at least a part of them are +2 valent.
