PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which can immediately update firmware without the use of a PC (without waiting for the completion of printing). SOLUTION: This printer 10 is set ready for the updating of the firmware from a portable recording medium such as a USB memory 30, and unready for the acceptance of print data from the PC, when a predetermined operation (a power-up operation attended with a special operation) is performed.
